Just the unpleasant-sounding
name can make your foot hurt. A heel spur sounds like something that would be
painful, and it is. For millions of people around the world, a bit of abnormal
bone growth called a heel spur causes excruciating and continuous pain that
interferes with their daily lives.
Fortunately, heal spurs
treatment is available.
If you have sharp pain in
your heel, heel spurs are likely to be the cause. Because every step you take
and every moment you stand causes a pointy piece of bone to press deeply into
the nerves, muscles, tendons and flesh of your foot, the pain is often intense
and worsens throughout the day. You can have severe pain, noticeable
inflammation and even visible bruising. And because the damaged area can swell
when you aren’t using your feet, even rest doesn’t eliminate the pain.
When combined with plantar faciitis -- another kind of inflammation and
tightening in the heel -- the symptoms can be even worse. In fact, a heel spur
often grows into the plantar facia, causing further pain and damage. In some
cases, walking may become very difficult or even impossible.
An x-ray is necessary to
determine for sure if your foot pain is caused by a heel spur, plantar faciitis
or both, but this may not be necessary for you since the treatments are
The most commonly recommended
heel spurs treatment is the HTP heel seat, a product with a patented
acupressure ridge located just in front of the area where your pain originates.
The gentle massaging that the heel seat produces with each step loosens
tightness and eases away inflammation. While you may have some initial soreness
when using a product like this, that’s actually a sign that the massaging
action is working to reduce your pain, inflammation and tightness.
Doctors often turn to
medications and even surgery to treat bone spurs in the heel, but you may not
need to take pills every day or subject yourself to the additional pain and
lengthy rehabilitation that results from surgery. When combined with the use of
night splints to keep your foot from swelling and tightening as you rest, HTP
heel seats and similar heel cushions can dramatically reduce pain. Stretching
exercises can be effective too.
The most important thing to
remember is that heel spurs treatment is available. You don’t have to
experience morning pain, pain with every step and pain even when resting. There
are a variety of simple, inexpensive actions you can take to feel better.
